Will You Come Into the Woods?

At the end of this month, NM Theatre will be opening the curtains of their last show of the year, Into the Woods which will complete the annual trilogy. Earlier this year NM Theatre performed War of the Worlds and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged].

Under the direction of Caleb Chew and Paul Thompson the spring musical is a staple and fan favorite of the NM community.

This year, NM junior Brienna Duteau has taken on the helm of Music Director and will be conducting the live pit orchestra. Several NM Music Dept. students will be making up the pit as well as several others recruited from the Groton Hill Youth Wind Ensemble of which Duteau plays in as principal flute.

Into the Woods is based upon the book of the same name by James Lapine. The musical interpretation is by Stephen Sondheim, a well known lyricist who made his mark writing the music in West Side Story. It first premiered on Broadway in 1987. The musical features several prominent fairytale characters including Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and many more. The audience follows the paths of these characters as all their wishes come true and they are met with the consequences of their actions.

Cast and crew began working hard on the show since early January rehearsing multiple times throughout the week and are now in the final stretch with the infamous Tech Week beginning the Monday after break. Chew testifies to this with:

“Between our all-student pit led by Brienna Duteau, our all-student tech crew led by Jack Rubin and Kate Babine, and our wonderful ensemble cast of 28 students, there has been a tremendous collective effort to make our joint dream a reality. We spent all fall trying to secure the rights to Into The Woods, and now we get to turn that passion into work ethic, and I personally am frequently moved by their love of theatre and each other. My scheduling demands are not easy, and they rise to the challenge every day for hours after school, and have been doing so since January. These students are exemplary theatre-makers, simply put.”

Shows will take place on Friday, April 26th @7PM; Saturday, April 27th @2PM&7PM; and Sunday, April 28th @7PM in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets can be purchased at the door  and are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
